Description: Dimethyl sulphate is an organic compound that can be regarded as a dimethyl ester of sulphuric acid. It is mainly used as a methylation reagent in organic synthesis. Colourless or slightly yellow, it is an oily flammable liquid with a slight onion odour, which can be rapidly hydrolysed to sulphuric acid and methanol at 50°C or in alkaline water, and decomposes slowly in cold water. It is flammable when exposed to heat, open flame or oxidising agents.
